Betsy Ross heiratete 1773 John Ross, Sohn des Reverend Eneas Ross. John Ross fiel als Soldat im amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg. Betsy Ross führte das familieneigene Polsterei-Geschäft in Philadelphia weiter, zu dem auch das Nähen von Flaggen gehörte. Am 14.6.1777 beschloß der Continental Congress in Philadelphia (das noch bis 1800 Hauptstadt der Vereinigten Staaten war), "stars-and-stripes" als Nationalflagge zu führen.
