Sie galt als sehr solide und erzielte einen jährlichen Gewinn von 100.000 $, die Aktien notierten mit 160 weit über pari und der president George S. Puffer hatte so viel Zutrauen in seine Bank, daß er gerade im Begriff war, auf dieser Kursbasis Aktien hinzuzukaufen. Die Korrespondenzbank der Atlantic State Bank im Finanzdistrikt von Manhattan war die Metropolitan National Bank. Am Morgen des 14. Mai 1884 hatte die Atlantic State Bank noch voller Vertrauen ihre gesamten Bargeldbestände an ihre Clearingbank in New York gesandt. Mittags dann blankes Entsetzen: Die Metropolitan National Bank war zahlungsunfähig. Daraufhin schloß auch die Atlantic State Bank, allen Bargeldes beraubt, ihre Schalter.
