Die früheste und wichtigste Goldminen-Gesellschaft hatte mehr als 100 Meilen lange Gräben angelegt, um Wasser zu den Minen in der Nähe von Placerville, Kalifornien zu leiten und um damit das Gold aus der Erde herauszuspülen. Dort befand sich die älteste und auch bedeutendste Gold-Rush-Gemeinde.
