Gegründet 1873 und 1874 mit der Greenville and French Broad RR, einer North Carolina Linie, konsolidiert. Die Strecke zwischen Spartanburg S.C. und Hendersonville, N.C. wurde 1879 eröffnet. 1881 im Konkurs verkauft und im gleichen Jahr reorganisiert als Asheville and Spartanburg RR. 1894 kam sie unter Kontrolle der Southern Ry. Keine 30 Jahre danach verfügte die Southern Ry. mit 7.000 Meilen Gleislänge über das mächtigste Eisenbahn-System im Südosten der USA. Die Welt endete für die Southern Ry. im Westen jeweils am Ostufer des Mississippi in St. Louis, Memphis und New Orleans, im Norden fuhr sie bis Cincinnati und Washington, D.C., im Süden reichten die Gleise bis nach Florida hinein. | | Specials: | Originalunterschriften William H.
