Er besteht aus Kohlenstoff-Atomen, die auf so geschickter Art und Weise verbunden sind, dass sie den Diamanten zum härtesten auf der Erde vorhandenen Material werden lassen. In einem hinduistischen Manuskript aus dem 4. Jahrhundert v.Chr. wurde erstmalig über Diamanten berichtet. Man vermutet jedoch, dass die ersten Diamantenfunde bereits im 4. Jahrtausend vor unserer Zeit in Indien stattfanden. Als die indischen Vorkommen Anfang unseres 18. Jahrhunderts erschöpft waren, wurden etwa 30 Jahre später Vorkommen in Brasilien und in den siebziger Jahren des 19. Jahrhunderts in Südafrika und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Venezuela, Kongo, Namibia, Angola und Ghana entdeckt. Heute ist Australien Hauptlieferant für Diamanten. Die Weltproduktion an Naturdiamant liegt heute bei ca. 20 Tonnen p.a. und deckt bei weitem nicht den Bedarf der Industrie ab. Etwa 80% des Bedarfs werden heute durch synthetisch erzeugte Diamanten, deren Eigenschaften wie Zähigkeit, Kristallhabitus, Leitfähigkeit und Reinheit genau beeinflusst werden können, gedeckt. | | Specials: | Orloff Diamant-Ges.
