Das Hospiz ist benannt nach Bernhard von Aosta, der auch dem Pass seinen Namen gab. Er soll das Hospiz um 1050 zusammen mit der Königin Ermengarde, der Gattin Rudolfs III. von Burgund gegründet haben.
