Der Bau resultierte aus dem wachsenden Bedarf an Kohle in den Industrieregionen Oxford und London. Der Kanal verbindet den Worcester & Birmingham Kanal mit dem Fluß Avon in Warwickshire. Insgesamt waren 56 Schleusen im Betrieb. 1856 wurde der Kanal von einer Eisenbahngesellschaft aufgekauft.
