Das östliche Gebiet ging 1783 an die Vereinigten Staaten über. Das Westliche erwarb Napoleon 1800 von Spanien zurück, um es 1803 für 15 Mio. $ an die Vereinigten Staaten (Louisiana Purchase) zu verkaufen. Der südliche Teil wurde 1804 als Territorium organisiert und 1812 mit einem Teil West-Floridas als 18.
