Gründer waren u.a. die Kgl. Seehandlung (Preußische Staatsbank), Disconto-Gesellschaft, Deutsche Bank, Berliner Handels-Gesellschaft, M.A. von Rothschild & Söhne, Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechselbank. 1906 erhielt die Bank das Recht zur Ausgabe von Banknoten im Schutzgebiet Kiautschou und in China. Niederlassungen in Shanghai, Tientsin, Kalkutta, Berlin, Hankow, Tsingtau, Hongkong, Yokohama, Kobe, Singapur, Hamburg und Kanton. Die Aktien waren an allen großen deutschen Börsen notiert, wobei der Umrechnungs-Kurs des Shanghai-Tael zur Mark zum Zwecke des Börsenhandels mit 2,50 festgesetzt war.
