Das Herzstück der 500 Meilen langen Hauptstrecke von Chicago, Ill. nach Council Bluffs, Ia. (500 Meilen) war die ab 1854 gebaute und schon 1868/69 teils auf Staatskosten durch eine Eisenkonstruktion ersetzte Brücke über den Mississippi bei Rock Island. Reorganisiert 1880 durch Fusion mehrerer Vorgängerbahnen.
