Die am 18.7.1885 in Betrieb genommene Standseilbahn verbindet das an der Aare gelegene Marziliquartier mit der höher gelegenen Altstadt, dem Kern von Bern. Bis 1973 wurde sie als Wasserballastbahn betrieben: ein Tank an der Bergstation wurde mit Wasser aus dem Stadtbach gefüllt, woraufhin die schwerere obere Kabine beim Hinabgleiten die untere Kabine mitsamt Passagieren den Hang hinaufzog.
