Der Betrieb wurde durchgehend bis Mendrisio von der Ferrovie Nord Milano ausgeführt, die auch das Rollmaterial zur Verfügung stellte. Wegen Unrentabilität wurde das Betrieb Valmorea-Mendrisio auf italienischer Seite bereits 1928 eingestellt. Die Schweizer Strecke Mendrisio-Stabio prosperierte hingegen als Industriebahn. Heute verkehren die Museumszüge des Club del San Gottardo auf der Strecke.
