Im März 1890 war die Bahn fertig (die spätere Ferrocarril de Tocopilla al Toco als bedeutendste private Güterbahn in Chile transportierte dann auf ihrer Schmalspurstrecke, die 17 Meilen lang mit kontinuierlich 4 % Steigung kurvenreich den Westhang der Anden hinaufführte, mit 38 Lokomotiven und Zügen im 30-Minuten-Takt viele Jahrzehnte lang Salpeter in einer der trockensten Regionen des Landes).
