Russell Sage (1816-1906), als Finanzier, Eisenbahnpräsident, Börsenhändler, Spekulant, Politiker und Mann der Affären ist er einer der am meisten bekannten Personen an der Wall Street. Er kaufte sich 1874 einen Platz an der New York Stock Exchange. Er war der Begründer der Börsentermingeschäfte, noch heute bekannt als “puts” und “calls”. Außerdem war er eng befreundet mit Jay Gould. Die Männer vertrauten einander. “Mr. Gould was saved in critical moments by the help of Mr. Sage.” Er hatte einen aktiven Anteil am Bau von 5.000 Meilen amerikanischer Eisenbahnen, war an Telegraphengesellschaften beteiligt z.B. an der Atlantic & Pacific Telegraph Co. und der Western Union.
