Jh. wurde die Stadt von Ungarn erobert, dem es bis zum Ende des 1. Weltkrieges als Komitatshauptstadt zugehörig war. Im Frieden von Trianon fiel die Stadt mit der umliegenden Karpatoukraine zunächst an die neu gegründete Tschechoslowakei.
