Bald darauf prägten schwerindustrielle Betriebe wie die Schenectady Locomotive Works und die American Locomotive Co. das Stadtbild. 1886 verlegte Thomas A. Edison sein Versuchslabor nach Schenectady, Anfang des 20 Jh. wurde die Stadt Firmensitz von General Electric, was ihr auch den Beinamen „Electric City“ einbrachte.
