Die Firma dehnte sich bald nach New York City und Philadelphia aus, drang tief in den Süden vor und um 1850 transportierte sie per Eisenbahn und Postkutsche im Westen bis St. Louis. Mit Reorganisation als AG im Jahr 1854 (damals in Konkurrenz zu Firmen wie American Express) eine der ältesten bis heute an der NYSE notierten AG‘s. Bereits 1929 in eine Investmentgesellschaft umgewandelt, die damals u.a. zweitgrößter Aktionär der Pennsylvania RR und drittgrößter der New York, New Haven & Hartford RR war sowie große Anteile an American Express und der Norfolk & Western RR hielt.
