Konzessioniert wurde die Bahn 1857 als Minnesota & Northwestern RR. Die 40 Meilen lange Strecke Mankato-Wells, Minn. wurde erst 1874 endlich fertig. Ab 1872 Central RR of Minnesota. Diese dann von der Southern Minnesota Ry übernommen.
