Die Gründung der Gesellschaft fand am 11.2.1826 statt, die Eröffnung des Universitätsbetriebes war 1828. In der Universität von London sollten alle Studenten Aufnahme finden, die aus religiösen Gründen in Oxford oder in Cambridge abgelehnt wurden. 1829 wurde eine weitere Institution gegründet, die schließlich 1829 mit der ersten Gesellschaft fusionierte.
