Die C.V.RR. war bereits 1850 entstanden als Nachfolger der 1835 konzessionierten Norristown & Valley Ry., welche an dem Projekt gescheitert war. 1853 wurde die Strecke Downingtown-King of Prussia-Norristown eröffnet, die Betriebsführung lag zunächst bei der Philadelphia, Germantown & Norristown RR und ging 1858 an die Philadelphia & Reading RR. 1887/88 im System der Pennsylvania RR gelandet. Durch eine Verlängerung bis Trenton ergab sich für die Pennsylvania RR damit für ihre von New York nach Westen fahrenden Züge eine Abkürzung um 25 Meilen.
