Das ehemals größte europäische Unternehmen zur Herstellung von Flugzeugtriebwerken und Luxusautomobilen wurde 1906 von Charles Stewart Rolls (1877-1910) und Frederick Henry Royce (1863-1933) gegründet. Ende 1970 geriet die Firma in erste finanzielle Schwierigkeiten, die im Jan. 1971 zur Konkursanmeldung führten. Die Triebwerksfertigung wurde danach auf die von der britischen Regierung neu gegründete Rolls Royce Ltd. übertragen.
