Der Abtransport mit Karren in‘s Tal nach Bellefonte und zum Pennsylvania Canal blieb jedoch mühsam. So baute man ab 1858 diese 21 Meilen lange Bahn als erste Eisenbahn im Centre County, die 1862 auf ganzer Länge in Betrieb ging. Sie hatte einen Höhenunterschied von mehr als 300 m zu überwinden und war deshalb eine höchst interessante Konstruktion: Von Bellefonte liefen die Gleise zunächst nach Milesburg und dann das Bald Eagle Valley hinauf bis zum Fuß der Allgeheny Mountains. Der steile, 7 Meilen lange Anstieg den Hang hinauf bis auf das Plateau mit seinen Kohle- und Holzvorkommen erfolgte als „switch-back“, also eine zickzackförmige Streckenführung, bei der der Zug immer wieder die Fahrtrichtung wechselte. 1881 kaufte die mächtige Pennsylvania RR diese Bahn. | | Specials: | Holzstich-Vignette mit Personenzug.
