Die erste entstand 1848 und betrieb einen Liniendienst zwischen New York über New Orleans und Havana/Cuba nach Chagres am Isthmus von Panama. Sie erhielt von der US-Postverwaltung zudem einen 10 Jahre laufenden Postvertrag für die Postbeförderung zwischen New York und Kalifornien. Nach dessen Ablauf stellte die Ges. ihren Betrieb ein. Diese 1883 gegründete zweite Ges. ihres Namens hat weder etwas mit ihrem Vorläufer noch mit dem 1920 gegründeten Nachfolger zu tun, der im Auftrag des U.S. Shipping Board die im 1.
