Sie erhielt dafür rund 12 Millionen Acre Land und Staatsanleihen in Höhe von 27 Millionen US-Dollar. Die ersten Gleise wurden 1865 in Omaha im Bundesstaat Nebraska verlegt, dabei wurde der heutige Name Union Pacific RR angenommen. Noch heute hat die UP ihren Sitz in Omaha.
