Norwegen und Großbrittanien waren die führenden Walfangnationen. Mit Einführung der Harpunenkanone, die die Wurfharpune ablöste (1863-68) war es möglich, die schneller schwimmenden Furchenwale (Blau-, Finnwal, u.a.) zu erlegen. In den 1930er Jahren hatte der neuzeitliche Walfang seine Blütezeit als 281 Fangboote über 40.000 Bartenwale fingen.
