Dieser hatte bei Vervielfältigungsversuchen entdeckt, dass geschliffener Solnhofer Schiefer, mit Fettkreide oder -tusche beschrieben und mit Gummiarabicum-Lösung geätzt, nur an den beschriebenen Stellen Druckfarbe annimmt.
