place: | Paris | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 126 | | Info: | Émile Salmson (1858-1917) gründete 1890 eine Werkstatt für Dampfkompressoren und Zentrifugalpumpen für die Eisenbahn und das Militär. Ab 1896 produziert er auch mit Benzin betriebene Fahrstühle und Motoren, später Flugzeugmotoren. Im 1. Weltkrieg baut Samson in Billancourt hauptsächlich komplette Jagdflugzeuge. Nach dem Krieg braucht es neue Produkte. Salmson baut zunächst Karrosserien und erwirbt dann von Armand Bovier die Lizenz zum Nachbau des bis dahin in England als G.N. bekannten Cyclecar. Fast 3.000 Stück dieses leichten Zweisitzers baute Salmson 1919-21. 1922 wurde die Fahrzeugfertigung als separates Unternehmen unter obigem Namen Soc. des Moteurs Salmson S.A. ausgegliedert. Emile Petit schuf dann den ersten Salmson eigener Konstruktion, dessen ohv-Motor mit 1087 ccm die Basis für alle späteren Salmson darstellte. Dieser kleine Vierzylinder erwies sich vor allem im Motorsport als ein ernsthafter Konkurrent seiner Klasse.
