Stutz beschäftigte sich seit 1898 mit dem Bau von Prototypen motorisierter Kutschen. 1910 gründete er die Stutz Auto Parts Co. zur Teilefertigung und 1911 die Ideal Motor Co. zur Fahrzeugproduktion. 1911 begann die Autoproduktion unter dem Markennamen Stutz. 1913 schloss er die beiden Unternehmen zusammen unter der Firmierung Stutz Motor Car Co. of America. 1916 wandelte er die Firma in eine AG um.
