Diese Strecke stellte mehr als die Hälfte der bedeutenden Haupteisenbahn von Chicago nach Alton dar und war seit 1868 auf ewig an die Chicago & Alton RR verpachtet. 1884 wurden die Aktien der Saint Louis, Jacksonville & Chicago RR 1:1 in solche der Chicago & Alton RR umgetauscht. Die C&A kam von 1906-31 im Wechsel unter die Kontrolle der Union Pacific, der Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific und der Nickel Plate Railroads, 1931 zur Baltimore & Ohio, 1947 durch Fusion zur Gulf, Mobile & Ohio, 1972 zur Illinois Central Gulf RR, 1987 schließlich an die Chicago, Missouri & Western RR verkauft.
