Das Land war bereits sehr früh besiedelt. Marokko war Siedlungsgebiet der Phönizier, Machtbereich Karthagos, Teil des Römischen Reiches, während der Völkerwanderung von Vandalen durchzogen, dann fiel ein Teil an das Byzantinische Reich, bevor der Islam seine Vorherrschaft errang und die Geschichte der eigenständigen marokkanischen Dynastien begann. Durch die Verträge, die Frankreichs 1912 mit dem Sultan und mit Spanien schloß, wurde Marokko in ein französisches (Hauptstadt Rabat) und ein spanisches Protektorat (Hauptstadt Tetuán) aufgeteilt.
