Im Jahr 1841 wurde von dem Uhrmacher Julien Bourquin (ca. 1815 bis 1897) in St. Imier in der Schweiz eine Uhrmacherwerkstatt gegründet. Sein Sohn Ferdinand Bourquin (ca. 1845 bis 1903) arbeitete mit und entwickelte verschiedene Konstruktionen für Stoppuhren und Chronogrraphen. 1902 ließ Bourquin für seine Taschenuhren die Marke Leonidas registrieren, nach dem legendären König der Stadt Sparta. 1903 trat Constant Jeanneret-Droz in wirtschaftliche Verbindung mit der Witwe Bourquins, drei Jahre später hieß die Firma dann Leonidas Watch Factory, Vve. Ferdinand Bourquin. Die Kollektion umfasste Stoppuhren, Taschen- und Armband-Chronographen, so wie Borduhren für Autos und Flugzeuge. Das originale Leonidas-Kaliber 19 CH wurde bis in die 1930er Jahre gebaut. Nach dem 2. Weltkrieg hieß die Firma schlicht Leonidas Watch Factory Ltd. 1964 fusionierten die Ed. Heuer & Co. und die Leonidas Watch Factory zur Heur-Leonidas S.A. Biel.
