Schon 1854 hatte die „Broad Top Railroad Improvement Co.“ im Huntingdon County eine große Farm erworben und dort auf der grünen Wiese den Ort „Broad Top City“ aus dem Boden gestampft, einschließlich einer Sägemühle und eines Hotels. Im folgenden Jahrzehnt führten einerseits die Kohlevorkommen der Gegend zum starken Wachstum von Broad Top City, andererseits wurde der malerisch in den Blue Ridge Mountains gelegene Ort mit seinen zwei Hotels auch bald eine beliebte Sommerfrische für Leute aus Philadelphia und anderen Großstädten.
