place: | New York | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 91 | | Info: | Auf den Straßen von Manhattan waren Pferdebahnen bereits 1832 erschienen, aber diese erste Pferdebahn auf der Insel Staten Island eröffnete erst 1867. Sie beförderte Passagiere von der Fährstation Vanderbilt‘s Landing entlang der Küste nach Fort Wadsworth, später Verlängerung bis Tompkinsville, Port Richmond, Holland Hook und Mariners Harbour, dort Anschluß an die neu eröffnete Elizabeth Ferry. Mißmanagement und ungenügende Betriebseinnahmen führten zu mehreren Eigentümerwechseln, ehe 1887 die Staten Island Belt Line RR die Aktienmehrheit übernahm und die Bahn umfassend modernisierte. 1892-94 wurde die Pferdebahn elektrifiziert. 1971 endete die fast 90-jährige Baltimore & Ohio-Ära bei den Bahnen auf Staten Island, es übernahm die Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority, eine Abteilung der Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). 1989 wurde die North Shore line weitgehend stillgelegt.
