Gegründet bereits 1849 im Staate Illinois als Aurora Branch Railroad, 1855 wurde dann der obige Name angenommen. Keimzelle des Systems war die nur 77 Meilen lange Strecke Chicago-Mendota, Ill. Durch Fusionen, Übernahmen, Käufe in Konkursversteigerungen und eigene Neubaustrecken wurde daraus ein in der Spitze fast 10.000 Meilen langes System in den Staaten Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota und Wyoming. Die Bahn besaß solche strategische Bedeutung, daß im 1.
