Die weltweit allererste Pferdebahnlinie wurde 1850 in New York eröffnet (1854 folgte Paris, 1865 Berlin). Die Dampfstraßenbahnen fanden erst nach 1880 eine weltweite Verbreitung in den Großstädten. Die allererste elektrische Strassenbahn der Welt, gebaut von W. Siemens, wurde 1881 in Lichterfelde bei Berlin in Betrieb genommen. Benjamin Bloomfield war Gründer und Präsident der United States & European Propelling Car Co. Die Grundlage der Tätigkeit dieser Gesellschaft bildete das Patent Nr. 124.327 des Staates Louisiana, erteilt am 5.3.1872 an die Erfinder Henry C. Bull und B.
