Ab 1302 war es Pfandbesitz der Grafen von der Mark, die Lünen mit Einrichtung der Neustadt 1336 an das südl. Lippeufer verlegten. Mit der Eisenhütte Westfalia hielt 1827 die Eisenindustrie Einzug. Es folgte die Entwicklung einer vielseitigen Industrie mit Aluminiumwerk, Hüttenwerken, Maschinen- und Armaturenfabriken, Kraftfahrzeugindustrie und Großkraftwerk.
