So kam, daß 1727 trotz Proteste der Bank of Scotland die Royal Bank of Scotland mit königlichem Erlaß gegründet werden konnte. Zwischen diesen beiden Banken entstand ein scharfer Konkurrenzkampf, bei dem Royal Bank, die vom Staat bevorzugt wurde, wiederholt mit dem Notenschub operierte, um die Bank of Scotland bei der Einlösung ihrer Noten in Verlegenheit zu bringen. Seit 1873 auch in London vertreten.
