Er kämpfte während des Bürgerkrieges in New Bem, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Chantilly und Harpers Ferry. Bei Antietam, als er seine Truppen um sich sammelte, wurde er von einem Scharfschützen der Unions getötet.
