Tilden beeinflusste die New Yorker Finanzwelt und Politik fast ein halbes Jahrhundert lang, 1874 wurde er Gouverneur von New York. 1876 wurde Tilden fast sogar Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten (er wurde mit nur einer Stimme mehr von seinem Konkurrenten R.
