place: | Massachusetts | | Picture: |  | | Number: | 59 | | Info: | 1602 landete Kapitän Bartholomew Gosnold hier an der Küste und nannte die Landzunge “Cape Cod”. 1660 wurde die Stadt Falmouth gegründet, genannt nach dem englischen Fluß Fal in Cornwall, von dessen Mündung der Entdecker Gosnold seine reise unternommen hatte. Die Stadt war anfangs nicht nur Heimat für Fischer und Farmer, sondern um 1800 auch ein bedeutender Walfängerhafen. Ab 1910 ging die Bevölkerungszahl rasant aufwärts, nachdem durch die Einführung des Automobils Cape Cod mit seinen strahlend weißen Stränden viel leichter zu erreichen war.
