Die Firmengründung erfolgte 1894. Bis 1905 hat sich die Gesellschaft auf 300 acres vergrößert, beschäftigte 400 Arbeiter und produzierte über 200.000 Goldunzen im Jahr. Zurück ins Jahr 1892: James Burns und James Doyles, zwei der Gründer und Entdecker der Portland Mine, befürchteten, ihren Claim an die umliegenden und schon Gold fördernden Gesellschaften zu verlieren. So nahmen sie den Goldbaron Winfield Scott Stratton, dessen Goldmine "Independence" angrenzte, mit in das Team auf, um den Prozess- und weitere Entwicklungskosten bestreiten zu können. Die Portland Mine wurde die reichste Goldmine im Cripple Creek District mit der Produktion von insgesamt über 300 Mio. Goldunzen. | | Specials: | Ausgestellt auf W. S. Vorderseitig original signiert von einem der beiden Entdeckern der Goldader und Firmengründer James F. Burns (1853-1917) als Präsident und Frank G. Peck (1862-1926) als Sekretär. Dieses Zertifikat ist ein bedeutendes Dokument der erfolgreichsten Mine im Cripple Creek District. Dabei: Broschüre “The Portland - Colorado’s richest Gold Mine” von Joe Vanderwalker und Brian Levine, Victor, 1989, Erste Auflage, herausgegeben von der Syzygy Gold Mining Co., 64 S., sehr informativ, bebildert. | | Availability: | Issued to W. S. Stratton and hand signed by him on the back (excellent signature, dark and not cancelled). On the face signed by James F. Burns as president and Frank G. Peck (1862-1926) as a secretary. James Ferguson Burns (1853-1917) and James Doyle 1892 staked out a claim they called Portland after Burn's hometown. The ore was so rich that they had to sack and remove it at night. In seven month they had $70,000 worth of ore (worth about $1,400,000 in today's gold market!). The Portland Gold Mining Co. was the largest and richest of all of the Cripple Creek mines, and was known as the Queen of Cripple Creek. Extremely rare.
