Die Mine warf keine Gewinne ab und Shemwell konnte 1892 seine Lebensmittelrechnung in Höhe von 36,50 $ der Brüder Bernard, eines Lebensmittelgeschäftes in Colorado Springs, nicht begleichen. Die Bernards verzichteten auf die Begleichung der fälligen Rechnung gegen die Überschreibung eines 50%-igen Anteils an der Elkton Mine. George Bernard finanzierte zwei Jahre lang die Bohrungen. Kurz vor Bernards Pleite wurde endlich eine Goldader getroffen. Bereits in der ersten Woche nach diesem Fund, wurden 40.000 $ netto verdient. Bald wurde die Mine zu den bedeutendsten Goldminen des Cripple Creek Distrikts. Insgesamt produzierte die Elkton Mine Gold für 16 Mio. $. | | Specials: | Sehr dekorative Gestaltung mit Werksansicht. Shove wurde bereits 1899 zu einem Großaktionär der Gesellschaft: anläßlich der Übernahme seiner "Tornado Gold Mining Co." bekam er einen 17%-igen Anteil an der "Elkton Cons. Mining & Miling Co.". Shove bekleidete ferner einige wichtige Posten, u.a. war er leitender Direktor der Garden City Sugar & Land Co., der Gesellschaft, die die bekannte Garden City Western Railway 1915 baute. | | Availability: | The original Elkton claim was staked in 1891 by Colorado blacksmith William Shemwell. By 1892, Shemwell was on his last legs. Colorado Springs grocers Bernard had staked Shemwell to $36,50 in supplies. In exchange for cancelling his, the Bernard brothers received a half interest in the Elkton. Two years of labor and investment had not paid off. The brothers decided to work the Elkton for another two weeks and then close it down if no gold was fund. Near the end of the time they discovered a vein that would yield nearly $40,000 within a week. The Elkton mine enjoyed a long life and produced $16 million in gold. The Elkton made the three Bernard brothers and E.P. Shove to millionaires. After the incorporation in May 1892 the Tornado Gold Mining Co. was consolidated to Elkton. The Tornasdo stockholders, including stockbrocker Eugene P. Shove received approximately 17 percent of the comined company. This very pictorial certificate is hand signed by E.P. Shove as president. Eugene Shove was a prominent Colorado business leader, stockbrocker, manager of the Garden City Sugar & Land Co.
