Schon 1900 entwickelte Ernest Chenard leichte vierrädrige Fahrzeuge und gründete mit Henri Walcker 1901 in Asnières seine erste Firma, die 1907 eine AG und nach Gennevilliers verlagert wurde. 1923 gewann die Firma das allererste 24-Stunden-Rennen von Le Mans. 1925 war Chenard & Walcker mit 24.000 produzierten Fahrzeugen der viertgrößte Autohersteller in Frankreich. Ein in dem Jahr herausgebrachter kleinerer 1,1-Liter-Vierzylindermotor erwies sich als geniale Konstruktion, die das Fahrzeug bis auf 170 km/h brachte und in Autorennen den Ruf des „unbesiegbaren Chenard & Walcker“ begründete. Ende der 1930er Jahre setzte der Niedergang ein, der 1946 in der Übernahme durch Peugeot endete.
