Als dreibasisch-phosphorsaurer Kalk bildet es einen Hauptbestandteil menschlicher und tierischer Knochen und Zähne. Zweibasisch und einbasisch phosphorsaurer Kalk (als Gemenge auch als Superphosphat bezeichnet) ist seit langem das wichtigste Düngemittel in der Landwirtschaft. Neben natürlichen Vorkommen (Guano = Vogelmist) spielte im großtechnischen Maßstab vor allem die Superphosphatfabrikation aus Hochofenschlacke eine wichtige Rolle.
