Der Namenspatron war Lodewijk Elsevier, der im 16. Jh. in Rotterdam einen Bücherverlag aufbaute. 1937 Joint venture mit Nordesmann Publishing Co. und Aufbau einer eigenen Niederlassung in New York. 1951 Gründung der Elsevier Press Inc. in Houston, Texas. Ab 1955 Aufnahme eigener Papierproduktion in Übersee nach Kauf von Papierfabriken auf Neuseeland (ab 1960 auch in Kanada). 1962 Gründung der US Elsevier Publishing Co. und kurz danach der UK Elsevier Publishing Co. Heute publiziert Elsevier weltweit rund 1.800 Fachzeitschriften und mehr als 2.2.00 Bücher jährlich, verteilt auf 86 Standorte. Der Hauptsitz ist Amsterdam.
