Die seit dem Mittelalter bedeutende Handelsstadt Wyborg, heute gelegen in der Region Karelien zwischen Sankt Petersburg und der finnischen Grenze in der Oblast Leningrad, kam 1710 von Schweden an das Russische Reich und gehörte seit 1812 zum Großfürstentum Finnland. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg kam die Stadt Viipuri an das unabhängig gewordene Finnland, dessen zweitgrößte Stadt es damals war.
