Die Entwicklung der Mine betrieben der Trapper und Prospektor Richard Langford, der Bergwerksdirektor Nathaniel D. Moore und der Spekulant und Geschäftsmann John E. Burton. Im Juni 1888 gründete Burton mit einem Kapital von ungeheuren 7,5 Mio. $ die Bessemer Consolidated Iron Co. zur Übernahme seiner 5 Eisenerz-Minen im Gogebic County (bekannt als die “Burton properties”), der ehemalige US-Senator Stephen W. Dorsey wurde als president gewonnen. Die Firma gab 15 Frachtdampfer in Auftrag für den Transport von jährlich 800.000 t Eisenerz von Ashland, Wis. am Lake Superior zu den Stahlwerken in Cleveland. Burtons Unternehmen erlebte einen steilen Aufstieg, dem nach einigen Jahren ein tiefer Fall folgte.
