Der berühmte armenische Ölbaron Calust Sarkis Gulbenkian, bekannt geworden als der große Gegenspieler von Standard Oil und Mitbegründer der Turkish Petroleum Co., arbeitete anfangs für Mantashev. Alexander Mantashev war ursprünglich ein Kleinbauer, der so fleißig und sparsam war, dass es zum Ankauf eines Grundstückes mit einigen Weinstöcken reichte. Dann fand man Öl in seinem Garten und über Nacht Mantashev wurde reich. Gulbenkian lernte Mantashev kennen auf seiner Flucht aus dem Osmanischen Reich.
