Mit indirekt beleuchteten Rundgemälden, in deren Mitte sich der staunende Betrachter befand, wurden ihm Landschaften und geschichtlich bemerkenswerte Ereignisse nahegebracht. Die Durchmesser der für die Panoramen errichteten Gebäude betrugen oft über 40 Meter! Das erste Panorama der Welt zeigte der Schotte Rob. Parker 1787 in Edinburgh. Es folgten Panoramen 1820 in Paris und 1829 in London. An der Wende vom 19. zum 20.
