Mitte des 19. Jh. war ganz Sumatra mit Ausnahme von Atjeh niederländisch. Der Krieg gegen Atjeh wurde erst 1895 siegreich beendet. Sumatra wurde mit seinen Naturschätzen zum wichtigsten Gebiet der Niederländisch-Indiens.
